Denominational-ism: For good or ill

      Christendom today has experienced denominationalism more than any other religion in the world.  According to the World English Dictionary, denominationalism is a sectarian spirit or policy or the division into denominations or sects. Denominationalism is the inclination of religious groups to experience schisms and separate into different groups over disagreements about doctrinal matters. In the Bible, it was the will of the Lord Jesus Christ that Christians should remain a united, indivisible unit, operating in love since love is the basis of the Christian faith.  Jesus prayed, ‘‘Holy Father; keep through your name those whom, you have given me that they may be one as we are. John 17:11. ‘‘I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in us , that the world may believe that You sent Me.’’ John 17:20,21.  However, over the years, Christianity has been divided into numerous denominations.  The questions arise; how beneficial is this to the body of Christ? Is the denominationalism the path of the Lord?  Shouldn’t all Christian denominations come together? What are the causes of denominationalism in a religion of love?

History revealed that in the first century, there was only one church, the Roman Catholic Church which was the earliest.  After the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, the Jewish Christian movement was scattered and under heavy persecution.  The Roman Empire legally recognized Pauline Christianity as a valid religion in 313 AD. Later in that century, in 380 AD, Roman Catholicism became the official religion of the Roman Empire. During the following 1000 years, Catholics were the only people recognized as Christians. Roman Catholicism was then, the only Christian denomination on earth. 

In 1054 AD, a formal split occurred between the Roman Catholic and other Orthodox churches. This division remains in effect till today. The next major division occurred in the 16th century with the Protestant Reformation under Martin Luther. Protestantism is one of the three major branches of Christianity, along with Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. It shares with all other Christians’ core beliefs in the doctrines of Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, the necessity salvation and the centrality of Jesus' death and resurrection.  Protestantism came from the split with Roman Catholicism during the Reformation in the 16^th century.  Led by Martin Luther, John Calvin and others, the reformers broke from the Roman Catholic Church due to abusive ecclesiological structures and theological differences. Protestants share an adherence to the centrality of scripture as well as a doctrine of salivation in Christ Jesus.

Different Protestant denominations have to varying degrees maintained or rejected Roman Catholic forms of worship. Anglican and Lutheran churches have maintained liturgies and rituals similar to those of the Roman Catholic Church, whereas other denominations, such as Baptists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, and United Church of Christ, have developed less liturgical forms of worship. Most Protestants practice baptism and communion as key rites of Christian initiation and ongoing devotion. Though originating in Europe, Protestant Christianity has spread all over the world through missionary activity and has members from nearly every country, race, and ethnicity.

 Those who remained faithful to Roman Catholicism believed that the central regulation of doctrine by church leaders was necessary to prevent confusion and division within the church and corruption of its beliefs.  However under the leadership of Martin Luther, the protestant movement also had disagreements on issues of doctrines and different denomination began to emerge as well. Today, Christianity has seen an outpouring of countless churches and denominations with different doctrines and practices though all believe in the Lordship of the Lord Jesus and the infallibility of the Gospel. 

In Nigeria alone, there are hundreds denominations as there are different faces of human beings. Every day, there is a massive proliferation of churches and denominations. People receive callings and set up their own churches in their living rooms, church movements had been created in shops. Why does this happen?  Why are there so many denominations? Why can't Christian groups simply agree to disagree and remain part of a single organization? Is this good for the body of Christ? Does it help the advancement of the kingdom of God?

      

In a chat with Pastor Dimeji Isaac of the Christ Temple, Lekki, Lagos, he said, social forces: class, racial and ethnic groups, regional divisions, and nationalism often lead to split in Christendom. According to him, it is good for churches to remain under one denomination, however, the differences in human outlook, the difficulty in administration and the stubbornness of people will make it difficult for Christianity to operate under one denomination. Speaking further, he said, ‘‘the main thing is that we are all followers of our Lord Jesus and we believe that the Bible is the word of God. These are the things that qualify one to be Christian. If we all obey the word of God and follow the commandments of our Lord Jesus, then it does not matter the denomination as long as Christ is preached’’ he said.

        Deaconess Shola Abimbola of the Global Church of the Living God does not share this opinion. According to her denominationalism is from the devil.  ‘‘We are serving the same God. Why should we be separated into different denominations?  Jesus preached love. It is clear from the scriptures that he wanted his followers to remain united as one. It is greed, individual ambitions, rather than the love of God that lead the Churches into various denominations, It is clearly not of God,’’ She said and she marveled at the number of denominations in Christendom today.   Deacon Ola Philip opined that denomination is not a barrier as far as we are serving the living God.   ‘‘When you look at it from the beginning, prophet- hood started from Noah, to Abraham  and the same God that called Moses, also called Samuel and they never  said the God that called them was different. They all came with harmonious teachings and that’s why the word of God is the same. In that sense denominationalism is not bad at all.

On the cause of denominationalism, he said, ‘‘Jesus said that in the last days, there will be many false prophets. They are all in town today. Each one of them called themselves Founder or General Overseer and brings up doctrines that suits them, that is why we have different denominations. Fake prophets contribute to denominationalism. Christ says that, there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.’’ Ephesians 4:4-6

In another chat with Pastor Tolu Fowotade of the Mountain and Fire and Miracles Ministry, he said that denominationalism can be beneficial. It is not a problem at all. According to him, the word of God is a mystery and it speaks differently to people with different meanings. According to what God wants to say to them and their level of relationship with him.  One denomination cannot help the advancement of Christianity.  Jesus had twelve disciples, they do not reason the same way. When the apostles received the baptism of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost, they were given diverse gifts and callings by the same spirit.  The Holy Spirit operates in different dimensions to different people and gives different gifts, different focus, and diverse operations by the same God.  This is why there are different denominations.  The word of God is so deep and full of meanings so denomination is not a problem at all. It is a reflection of the diversity of the gifts and callings of God’’ he said.

Speaking further, pastor Tolu said, ‘‘if a man of God is teaching a topic from the Bible, let’s say, he is speaking about the story of the woman with the issue of blood. He teaches the word according to the way the Holy Spirit lead him to teach it. Another man of God will pick the same topic and the same scripture and teach it from a different perspective and the congregation will still be blessed. Therefore, though the spirit is one there are diverse operations. It is not possible to operate under one denomination,’’ he said.  

Funmilola Jacobs of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, said, ‘‘denomination is unavoidable because Christianity has become the greatest religion in the world. It has spread farther than any other religion known to mankind. This spread could not have been possible without the efforts of different denominations, ministry, callings and missions in the body of Christ which are all working towards the same goal which is to spread the gospel and bring humanity into repentance. If we remove denominationalism from the history of Christianity, I do not think that we could have gone this far. Take Africa for example, it was the efforts of missionaries from various denominations such as the Catholic Church, the Methodist Church and the Anglican Church, the Lutheran Church all working in various fields that brought the light of Christianity to Africa. I don’t even think that one denomination is capable of taking the gospel to the whole world as Christ commanded. Denominationalism in my own opinion is the will of God as long as we all preach the Bible undiluted and stand under the Lordship of our lord Jesus. If we all follow is teachings and obey his commandments, then denominationalism is a blessing and not a course,’’ she said.

 Falling Under the Anointing: Is It Biblical?

“Falling under the anointing” remains one of the most debated and misunderstood practices in contemporary Christianity. Popular in many Pentecostal circles, the phenomenon was famously described by late American evangelist Kathryn Kuhlman as being “slain in the Spirit.” Yet, decades later, many believers still ask the same question: why do people fall when some pastors touch them, pray over them, blow on them, or simply come close?

Within Pentecostal theology, the explanation is often straightforward. The fall is said to occur because of the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit, commonly referred to as the anointing. Supporters argue that when God’s power manifests strongly, the human body may respond physically.

One frequently cited biblical reference is found in the Gospel of John. When soldiers came to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, He stepped forward and asked whom they were seeking. Upon replying, “Jesus of Nazareth,” He said, “I am He,” and the men drew back and fell to the ground (John 18:6). To many, this moment illustrates the overwhelming power of divine presence.

Discernment and Caution

Reverend Father Francis Emene of Saint Thomas Chapel, Catholic Church at University of Lagos, Nigeria offers a more cautious interpretation. Drawing from an Igbo proverb, he warned against confusing outward appearance with spiritual authenticity.

“There is an adage in Igboland which says that mechanics make it difficult to identify madmen because both are often dirty,” he said. “Scripture tells us that in the last days God will pour out His Spirit, but it also warns that many false prophets will arise. There are genuine ministers of God, and there are also false and occult ones. They can be found anywhere.”

He referenced the biblical warning that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light, emphasizing the need for spiritual discernment. According to him, dramatic displays often attract people because humans are drawn to the spectacular.

“People like what appears magical. When a man of God behaves in a certain way, people say, ‘That man is powerful.’ But the Bible instructs us to test all spirits,” he added.

On the origin of falling under the anointing, Father Emene acknowledged that the incident involving Jesus and the soldiers demonstrates divine power, though he stopped short of endorsing modern practices that replicate it without discernment.

The Anointing as a Tangible Experience

American preacher Tom Brown approaches the subject from a different angle, insisting that the anointing is real and can be physically felt. He pointed to Luke chapter 8, which recounts the story of the woman who had suffered from a bleeding condition for twelve years.

After touching the hem of Jesus’ garment, Jesus stopped and said, “Someone touched me; I felt power go out from me” (Luke 8:46). According to Pastor Brown, this passage suggests that spiritual power can be experienced physically.

“The anointing can feel like heat or electricity,” he said. “I’ve felt it many times. Sometimes I feel nothing, but others feel it when I pray for them.”

He recounted an experience involving a young woman with a painful knee. After a brief prayer, she later returned, describing how something entered her body and left her unable to move for several seconds. According to Brown, the pain disappeared instantly.

At the same time, he admitted that not every fall is spiritual.

“Sometimes people fall because they are conditioned to. They see others do it and follow along. I discourage that. People should focus on receiving from God, not copying a crowd,” he explained.

He also recounted an incident during a prayer session where a woman fell hard on a wooden floor yet later claimed she felt no pain, describing the experience as floating onto a soft surface.

Not the Measure of the Spirit

Pastor Emmanuel Onoja of Hope of Life Evangelical Church takes a more skeptical view. According to him, falling is often misunderstood as proof of divine encounter.

“There is a misconception that you must fall to be under the anointing,” he said. “The apostles did not fall at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended. They spoke in tongues, and those present were amazed.”

He expressed concern about services where everyone falls after the laying on of hands, describing such scenes as theatrical rather than biblical.

“In deliverance sessions, people may fall, and that can be understood. But if the same person falls every time, when will true deliverance take place?” he asked. “Falling is not evidence of the anointing. It can be deceptive.”

He further questioned why such manifestations were absent from Christ’s healing ministry.

“Which of Jesus’ healings happened this way? We never read that He held services where people fell as He touched them,” Onoja said.

Regarding the Gethsemane incident, he argued that it was not an example of being slain in the Spirit but a demonstration of authority.

“Jesus was showing that He had the power to stop His arrest if He wanted to. Yet He chose submission because of His mission to save humanity.”

A Matter of Divine Sovereignty

Evangelist Ezekiel Keith of House on the Rock Church, Lekki, offered a more open-ended view. According to him, no one can dictate how the Holy Spirit chooses to operate.

“The Spirit works in diverse ways, and we must be careful when dealing with spiritual matters,” he said. “Joel 2:28 tells us that God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh, with different manifestations. Falling can be one of them.”

Similarly, Mrs. Akpabio Eno of the Catholic Church urged restraint in judging spiritual experiences.

“No one can fully understand the ways of the Holy Spirit,” she said. “If electric current can knock a person down, how much more the power of God? People should feel something when they encounter Him.”

A Continuing Debate

Across denominations, the question remains unresolved. Some see falling under the anointing as a genuine response to divine power, others view it as psychological conditioning or misuse of spiritual authority. What remains consistent across perspectives is the call for discernment, humility, and a focus on spiritual fruit rather than physical reactions.

As Christianity continues to evolve in expression, the challenge for believers is not merely to ask whether something is powerful, but whether it aligns with Scripture, produces lasting transformation, and points people back to Christ rather than to spectacle.

Should Christians reject Blood Transfusion?

The Jehovah’s witnesses, a major denomination of Christianity in the world today with global membership numbering about 7million people is known for its rejection of blood transfusion as a medical procedure even at the point of death.  This doctrine is said to be supported by biblical verses from the book of (Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:10; Deuteronomy 12:23; Acts 15:28, 29) However, mainstream Christian denominations such as the Catholic Church, the Protestants and the Pentecostal do not support this doctrine.

 According to the United States National Library of Medicine, Blood transfusion is generally the process of receiving blood products into one's circulation intravenously. Transfusions are used for various medical conditions to replace lost components of the blood. Early transfusions used whole blood, but modern medical practice commonly uses only components of the blood, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, clotting factors, and platelets. There are many reasons one may need a blood transfusion, after knee or hip replacement surgery, or other major surgery or after a serious injury. A blood transfusion is a safe and common procedure during which you receive blood through an intravenous (IV) line placed in one’s blood vessels. It takes 1 to 4 hours to receive the blood, depending on how much the patient need. There are several sources of blood. The most common source of blood is from volunteers in the general public. Many communities have a blood bank at which any healthy person can donate blood. This blood is tested to see if it matches that of the patient.  Donated blood is tested for many different infections. Also, blood centers keep a list of unsafe donors. Donors answer a detailed list of questions about their health before they are allowed to donate. Questions include risk factors for infections that can be passed on through their blood, such as sexual habits, drug use, and current and past travel history.    

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the Bible prohibits ingesting blood and that Christians should therefore not accept blood transfusions or donate or store their own blood for transfusion. The belief is based on an interpretation of scripture that differs from that of mainstream Christian denominations. It is one of the doctrines for which Jehovah's Witnesses are most well known.

Watch Tower Society publications teach that the Witnesses' refusal of transfusions of whole blood or its four primary components—red cells, white cells, platelets and plasma—is a non-negotiable religious stand and that those who respect life as a gift from God do not try to sustain life by taking in blood, even in an emergency. Witnesses are taught that the use of fractions such as albumin, immunoglobulin and hemophiliac preparations are "not absolutely prohibited" and are a matter of personal choice.

The doctrine was introduced in 1945, and has undergone some changes since then. The Watch Tower Society has established Hospital Information Services to provide education and facilitate bloodless surgery. This service also maintains Hospital Liaison Committees, whose function is to provide support to adherents.

The founder of Jehovah’s witnesses, Charles Taze Russell was reported to have started this doctrine on "biblical" grounds. It is described as one of the ‘‘WTS' truly odd tenets.’’

You shall eat no blood whatever, whether of fowl or of animal, in any of your dwellings. Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people (Lv 7:26-27).

For the life of every creature is the blood of it; therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off (Lv 17:14).14:3-21),

According to the Catholic Church is a statement on the matter, Witnesses misunderstand what these passages are talking about. In both Leviticus 7 and 17 the prohibition is against the eating of blood, not reception of blood through transfusions (a medical procedure which was developed only within the last century). Witnesses ignore the fact that in a single passage in Leviticus the Lord prohibits the eating of both blood and fat: "It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither fat nor blood" (3:17). Yet the Watchtower does not condemn the eating of fat, and no Jehovah's Witness would feel any moral regret against eating a bag of fried pork or enjoying a nice, fatty cut of prime rib.

 

However, in the book of Genesis 9:4, the Bible says, ‘‘but flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.’’ In Leviticus 17:10-12, it says ‘‘ I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, and I will cut them off from the people. ¹¹ For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.^{[ 12} Therefore I say to the Israelites, “None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.” Similarly in the book of Deuteronomy 12:23, 23, only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.  Also in the book Acts 15:28-29, ²⁸ It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: ²⁹ You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.  According to the Jehovah’s witnesses injecting blood intravenously is the same as eating blood. Is this correct?

 

Can these scriptures be used to justify the rejection of blood transfusion at the point of death or severe medical condition of a Christian believer?  These scriptures are commonly quoted by the Jehovah’s witnesses in their door to door evangelism. They have been used as a valid point for the doctrine of blood transfusion rejection even in the face of critical illness although a Jehovah’s Witness name withheld said, it is a question of individual conscience for the members of the denomination.  According to her, there is no compulsion whatsoever in the doctrine as witnesses are free to make their own individual decision whether they will accept or reject blood transfusion. However, it is a standard doctrine of the organization. 

In a chat with Pastor Emmanuel Onoja of Hope of Life Evangelical Church on the doctrine of blood transfusion, he said, people suffer because of ignorance. I don’t see anything wrong in taking blood for medical reasons or in donating blood to save other people’s lives. Blood is very significant in the scripture. Take a look at our Lord Jesus Christ, he saved our lives by shedding his blood, there is nowhere in the scripture where the Bible forbid Christians from taking blood when they are ill.  The  Bible speaks of the blood of animals and not the blood of human being which is the one used in transfusion and the purpose is to save lives during critical medical procedure,’’ he said.

Reverend Father John Okoro of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Elegbata, Lagos Island, said, the Catholic Church accepts transfusions, "the Bible is not opposed to this kind of therapy that, on the other hand, was unknown in the times of Jesus.  Jesus Christ teaches us that giving one’s life for others is the greatest expressions of love, Jesus gave his blood so that we can have eternal life, he gave his blood. It is because of the sacrifice of Jesus that we have hope of eternal live after this earthly existence. To say that blood transfusion is wrong is clearly and erroneous teaching because of the example of our Lord Jesus. The purpose of blood transfusion is to save lives, that can’t be wrong or sinful,’’ he said.

Elder Ogunjobi of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Awoyaya said, I completely disagree with the Jehovah’s witnesses. The verses we are talking about is referring to food sacrificed to idols or animal blood sacrificed to idols. It was not talking about human blood donated to save lives in medicine.  I do not agree with their views on the subject of blood. As a minister of God, I feel that Christians should donate blood because it saves lives and when they have to take it for medical reasons they should. Jesus Christ taught us that the old prohibitions of food have no meaning in the New Covenant. 'The Kingdom of God is not a matter of food or drink, but of justice and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit' (Romans 14:17).

Polygamy is generally not acceptable in Christendom. Nevertheless, there are denominations where it is not frown at.

Till his death, a certain pastor (name withheld) of a major denomination in Nigeria was known with one wife, a Lady Evangelist who was the mother of his children in accordance with the doctrine of the church he represented. However, shortly after his death, four mistresses, with their children, born out of wedlock, ranging from 15 to 19 years of age appeared at his funeral. These mistresses, who had their children for the pastor, were shrouded in ultimate secrecy to the members of the church while he was alive.

Another pastor, a major figure in one of the nation’s largest denomination died in a plane crash. Shortly after his death, it was discovered that he had a secret second wife and children. This second wife surfaced after his death with photographs of a traditional wedding in which the pastor appeared with the second wife. It was a major embarrassment to the church with the GO holding a press conference explaining the position of the church.

In a chat with Pastor Adeyemi of Life Church, Lagos, who spoke on the subject, he said, polygamy, is African culture and no matter how we try to impose monogamy on Africans, there are people who will not be able to practice it. It was Christianity that imported the culture of one man one wife, it is alien to us. The Whiteman is known with one wife and then a mistress outside the marriage. African men are known with polygamy. What we see today is African men trying to practice monogamy along with the mistress culture. There are many men who claim to have one wife publicly but they have several mistresses in secret and some of them are men of God. This is very shameful. I personally feel that it is better for them to be opened, let them marry this women; bring them home instead of living a life of hypocrisy which is worse. There are advantages to monogamy and there are disadvantages to polygamy. I don’t think Jesus will ask me how many wives I married while on earth. I believe that he will ask me about my assignment in life whether I fulfill it or not. If a man of God has more than one wife, he should come out in the open instead of keeping it secret until death which is far worse,’’ he said.

In a chat with Superior Evangelist Oladokun J.P of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ifelodun Parish, Lagos ‘there is no law in the celestial Church of Christ that forbids one from marrying more than one wife, although in the bible, Apostle Paul advised that anyone who desires the office a Bishop should be husband of one wife. The Celestial church of Christ does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of polygamy. The Apostle gave this advice because of the problems that are associated to a polygamous home; one expects that the women will quarrel. The Bishop is expected to live an exemplary and peaceful life. How can that be if he is settling quarrels within his own household?  This was why Apostle Paul gave that advice, not as a commandment.’’

Speaking further he said, ‘‘my personal opinion is that one wife is better; a man that is married to one woman is likely to have a more peaceful household than a man with several wives. I personally will encourage monogamy instead of polygamy but we do not impose it on anyone in the Celestial Church and we don’t think that should stop a man from doing the work of God.  If we look at the scriptures there are people who marry more than one wife, people like Abraham, Jacob were polygamous men and God accepted them.   Furthermore, African culture is about polygamy, Christianity brought in monogamy into our lives. Don’t forget that before the advent of Christianity our forefathers were marring more than one wife and they do so because they were farmers and needed a large family for their farm work. Polygamy was also a matter of prestige to them. They did not condone adultery instead of them to commit adultery; they will rather marry the women.’’

In another chat with Most Senior Apostle Deji Oyenowo of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement, Gethsemane Garden, he opined that monogamy is preferable to polygamy. ‘I grew up in a polygamous home and my father tried with all his might to ensure that we all live in unity but it was not possible. It was after his death that we were able to come together as one family but it did not happen in his life time. In my one opinion, it is better to be a husband of one wife than to marry many wives. However, in the constitution of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, it is said that polygamy should not stop a man from doing the work of God either as an evangelist a shepherd or even a Bishop although the founder of the church, Moses Orimolade himself was a celibate, he never married and he lived a very pious life; devoting everything he had to the work of God. He however did not impose this on anybody. We have to understand that traditionally Africans marry more than one wife. Monogamy is a foreign culture so; the founder of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church did not impose his celibate life on anyone, he did not impose it on anybody in the church, although, in the Bible, the Apostle Paul in the book of 1^st Timothy 3, 1-12 said leaders in the church should be husband of one wife. He also did not impose his celibate life on anybody.

In n another chat with, the Right Reverend Adekunle Ilesanmi Dawodu, Bishop of Kogi Diocese of the African Church Cathedral he said the African church does not condone polygamy. According to him anyone who has more than one wife in the African church cannot hold a position of leadership. If he holds a position of leadership, he will be removed. Although, in the beginning when the African church started, one may marry more than one wife because of the prevalent culture of the people at the time but as time goes on, the people become enlightened to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus and now, the church forbids polygamy. It is not acceptable in the African church at all.

Speaking with Reverend Olamide Mobolaji Thompson of the African Church Cathedral Bethel, CMS, Lagos, on the same subject, he said, Polygamy is not accepted in the African church. Although, polygamy might not be regarded as sin but the things that might be associated with it makes it a sin. For example, a polygamous family is usually laden with infighting, quarrels and squabbles. Therefore, we cannot accept it in the church of God. If a man has more than one wife, the church will not send him away. Monogamy is an issue that cannot be imposed on anyone.  It his personal life but he cannot hold a leadership position in the African church.

In another chat with Deaconess Shola Abimbola of the Global Church of the Living God, ‘‘A Christian must be husband of one wife. In the words of the Lord Jesus,   the clearest evidence that monogamy is God’s ideal is from Christ’s teaching on marriage is in Matt. 19:3–6. In this passage, Jesus cited the Genesis creation account, in particular Gen. 1:27 and 2:24, saying ‘the two will become one flesh’, not more than two, Jesus commanded monogamy in this particular verse, she said.    Speaking further, she said, an important biblical teaching is the example of husband and wife with Christ and the Church in Eph. 5:22–33, which makes sense only with monogamy—Jesus cannot not have multiple brides. He was celibate. 

Polygamy is expressly forbidden for church elders (1 Tim. 3:2). And this is not just for elders, because Paul also wrote: ‘each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. ‘Paul goes on to explain marital duties in terms that make sense only with one husband to one wife,’’ she said.  

Elder Ajibola Theophilus of the United African Church, UAMC said, ‘‘God forbade the kings of Israel to be polygamous (Deut. 17:17). When they disobeyed there is trouble, including rivalry between David’s sons from his different wives (2 Samuel 13, 1 Kings 2); and Solomon’s wives helped lead Solomon to idolatry (1 Kings 11:1–3).   Jesus was celibate and he encouraged monogamy. Abraham and Sarah were polygamous because of temptations when Hagar became a second wife and this caused problems later.  Jacob only wanted Rachel, but was tricked into marrying her older sister Leah, and later he took their slave girls at the sisters’ urging, due to the rivalry between the sisters. (1 Sam. 25:42–43).  Polygamy is like divorce, which God tolerated for a while because of the hardness of people’s hearts, but was not the way it was intended from the beginning (Matt. 19:8). When the Moses Law had provisions for polygamy, it was only conditional: ‘If he takes another wife to himself …’ (Ex.21:10), not an encouragement,’’ he said.

Feet washing: Biblical truth or tradition

Feet washing service is often conducted by certain denominations in Christendom while it is neglected by some, though the Lord Jesus Christ commanded the practice in the bible.  

The Bible, the book of John 13:1-17 narrated how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet prior to his cruxifcion and resurrection. Many Christian denominations such as the Catholic Church have continued with the practice but some have not. 

According to the encyclopedia Britannica,  ‘‘Feet washing, also called washing of feet,  is a religious rite practiced by the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church on Maundy Thursday of Holy Week (preceding Easter) and by members of some other Christian churches in their worship services. The early Christian church introduced the custom to imitate the humility and selfless love of Jesus, who washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper (John 13:1–15), the night before his Crucifixion. The practice was originally an act of hospitality in Palestinian homes performed for guests (who wore sandals and walked on dusty roads) by a servant or the wife of the host. St. Paul refers to the custom in 1 Timothy 5:10 and St. Augustine mentions it in one of his letters about ad 400. The Maundy Thursday ceremony, observed in Rome by the pope and locally in parish churches, first appeared in the Spanish liturgy of the 7th century.’’

 In a chat with Reverend father Paul Akin-Otiko, OP, of the Catholic Church, University of Lagos; He said feet washing are done on Holy Thursday during the Easter Week. We celebrate the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood. It was before Jesus at the last supper that he washed the feet of his disciples. He told them that they should do the same as a mark of service and humility.  In the Catholic Church, it is the priest that does the washing of feet and he does so as mark of service and humility just as Jesus did to his disciples. When a priest does that he shows that he is doing it as a servant. He does as one who imitates the lord and in the spirit of service to others and to the Lord.’’ Speaking further, Father Akin-Otiko said, ‘‘the priest does not wash everybody’s feet, he selects 12 persons to represent the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. 

These 12 people are chosen from among the congregation.  The feet washing service as a biblical backing. Jesus did it and commanded us to do it and we have been doing it in obedience to his commandment. The significance of the feet washing service is to show that those who want to become leaders must serve others and Christ intended that we should all serve one another.’’  

Father Paul Akin-Otiko quoted, the book of John 13: 1-17 which reads, ‘‘13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. ² The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. ³ Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; ⁴ so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. ⁵ After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. ⁶ He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” ⁷ Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” ⁸ “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”  ⁹ “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”  Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”¹¹ For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not everyone was clean. ¹² When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.¹³ “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. ¹⁴ Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵ I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. ¹⁶ Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.’’

In another Chat with Pastor Favoured of the Living Faith Church, Lekki, he said, ‘‘feet washing service is one of the doctrines of the Living faith Church and we do it in faith since Jesus commanded it. We believe that if we do it we will have a part with Jesus. It is a biblical injunction as it is written in the book of John 13. We do not do anything that contrary to the scriptures in the Living faith Church. It also reminds the believers of the importance that Jesus placed on service and humility. This is what the Christian faith is all about; Jesus said by this, men will know that ye are my disciples if you have love amongst yourselves. Service is a product of love,’ he said.

In another chat with Leader Rotimi Akinbami of the celestial Church of Christ, he said, ‘‘Feet washing is one of the doctrines laid down for the celestial Church of God by the Late Oshofa, the founder of the celestial Church of Christ. It is one of the very important doctrines in the Celestial Church of Christ. This practice is observed by the Church all over the world in accordance with the scriptures. The feet washing service is conducted by the shepherded of the Church and he washes the feet of every member of the church that is present during the service.’’ Speaking further, he said, it is a symbol of humility and service to our fellowman,’’ he said.

Prophetess Victoria Akinbani on the other hand said, feet washing is cannot be argued on the excuse that it is merely a metaphor or symbol of humility and service and so we do not need to observe feet washing service. Jesus, specifically in verses 13:14–17, instructed us:  ¹⁴ "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them."  We do it during the Holy Week in accordance with the Lord’s instructions,’’ she said.

Speaking on the practice, Deaconess Shola Abimbola of Global Church of the Living God, ‘’Jesus said we should wash one another’s feet he was talking about real service, not a ritual. When Jesus said, wash one another's feet, he meant, serve one another. He simply used a specific example as a figure of speech representing all types of service. Jesus is saying that we should humble ourselves and be willing to do even menial tasks for one another.  This is not to say that it is wrong for Christians to wash one another's feet.  We obey the intent of Jesus' command not by washing our guests' feet, but by helping them in other ways. There is no need to insist on taking the command literally. We need to focus more on the intent’’

In another chat with Evangelist Ezekiel of House on the Rock Church, Lekki, he said, ‘feet washing are a symbolic practice, whether we observe it or not in our churches do not really matter. What is important is the point Jesus was trying to make when he did it. He was trying to tell us to be humble, to serve and love one another to the point of washing each other’s feet.
